Delete your Bonds account

Last updated: August 2026

This page explains how to request deletion of your Bonds account — the family-tree and messaging app — and exactly what is deleted and what is kept when you do.

How to request deletion

From inside the app:

  1. Open Bonds and go to the Profile tab.
  2. Under Privacy & data, tap Delete my account.
  3. Tap Request deletion and confirm. Your account is queued for deletion immediately, and the screen then shows the date you asked.

Or by email, if you cannot sign in:

  1. Email bondssupport@gmail.com with the subject Account deletion request.
  2. Send it from the email address you signed in with, and include the phone number on the account, so we can confirm the account is yours. We will not delete an account on an unverified request.

What happens straight away

The moment you confirm in the app:

The rest of your data is removed afterwards, by hand, within 30 days. We do it that way rather than automatically because your information is spread across shared family trees and group content, and an automatic sweep would take other people's records with it.

Deletion is permanent. Once the removal has run it cannot be undone. Before then, you can cancel by emailing bondssupport@gmail.com — there is no cancel button in the app. If you only want to stop using Bonds for a while, signing out is enough; signing out deletes nothing.

What is deleted, within 30 days

When the removal runs, we delete:

What is kept, and for how long

Some information does not disappear when your account does. We would rather say so plainly than imply a cleaner outcome than we can deliver.

WhatWhy it remainsHow long
Messages and chat media you already sent Chats are end-to-end encrypted and already delivered to the other participants' devices. We cannot read them, and we cannot reach into someone else's copy to remove them. Until the other participants delete them
Photos, events and albums you contributed to a shared group They belong to the group, and removing them would delete other people's shared history. Until the group or its admin deletes them
Information other people recorded about you in their family tree A relative may have added your name, dates or relationships to their own tree. That entry is their record, not part of your account. Until they remove it — email us and we will act on it
Recovery copies of deleted shared items An accidental deletion can be reversed inside a short window. 30 days, then permanently removed
Records we are required to keep Where the law requires us to retain something — for example a safety or abuse report — we keep only that record. As long as the law requires

If you want less than full deletion

You do not have to delete your account to control your data. In the app, under Privacy & data → Privacy, you can stop being discoverable by phone number, change who can see each profile field, turn face recognition off and delete face data already stored, and manage blocked people.
